1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Beginning March 1, 2025, the library will launch its "1000 Books Before Kindergarten" program! Designed to promote reading with caregivers from a young age, build early vocabulary, and to foster a lifelong love of learning, this program is open to all children ages 0-5 whose households have a Chetco Library card or reside within the Library District.

How to Sign Up

You can stop by the library anytime to enroll your child in the program and pick up their reading log. Just tell any staff member you'd like to sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. If you have any questions about the program before enrolling your child, visit our Contact Us page and get in touch!

How it Works

It's easier to read 1000 books than you think! If you read one picture book to your child a day, they will complete the challenge in about three years. If you read three books to your child a day, they will complete the challenge in about one year!

What’s in it for my child?

In addition to hearing more words spoken over the course of their Pre-K years, which builds early vocabulary, fostering a lifelong love reading, and creating more opportunities to bond with their caregivers through storytelling, your child...

  1. Earns a progress sticker and a small prize for every 100 books they read
  2. Gets a colorful certificate they can take home when they complete the challenge
  3. Can choose an early reader book for their very own home library when they complete the challenge
  4. Have the opportunity to be recognized on the Youth Department’s new Reader Hall of Fame when they complete the challenge

So… my kid is obsessed with just ONE book right now. What do I do?

Read it to them! Every single reading of a book counts as one book read in your log. So if you read "I Love Trucks" with your child five times in a row, that counts as five books read. Go ahead and log it!
